VAT Increases to 7.5% Tax Payment for Every Call, Data and SMS Transaction made on Your Phone

Only God knows what this country is turning into as the government has approved that every subscriber should pay 7.5% for important transactions such as calls, data purchases and sending SMS on your phone.

Knowing fully well that the new Value Added Tax (VAT) Policy will not only affect subscribers but incomes of different homes in the country equally, President Buhari signed the country finance bill into law with a sweeping effect on Nigeria’s fiscal laws. The government believed that the new tax regime will not adversely affect Nigerians, but that seems to be their instinct as it is.

Subscribers are already complaining bitterly about it on social media that the VAT shouldn’t apply to calls and data, but apparently, the telecoms vow to be dumb regarding it.

So, according to an experiment by a friend on how the VAT increase affects call charges;  after making a 6 seconds call across to a friend he was billed N2. 82k and similar experiment of 10sec call were charged N5.

Similarly, SMS is no longer sent for the usual N4, however, it's now N4.10 per SMS sent.

Nigerians have also been notified by Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) on social media about the new charges on the transactions which have begun since the 1st of February 2020; according to them:
