How to Stop Windows 10’s Antivirus from Sending Files to Microsoft

Normally, Windows 10's inbuilt antivirus automatically forwards a sample of suspicious files from your PC to Microsoft.

If you're using Microsoft Defender or Windows Security then bear in mind that it sends suspicious files to Microsoft so that the company can learn about new viruses and threats.

These sample files submitted from your PC helps Microsoft equip its antivirus with new virus definitions. It'll enable it to block related files whenever it finds them on someone's computer.

Microsoft tries not to include any personal information in the submitted files then Microsoft will ask for your permission before sending the file.

Although this helps boost security,  you can decide to turn it off on your computer. Here will show you how to turn this option off on your PC.

How to Stop Windows Security Automatic Sample Submission

If you're not comfortable with Windows 10 antivirus sending a sample of your files to Microsoft then you can stop it or decide to submit a sample manually by following the below guide.

1. Search for "Windows Security" from the Start menu and open the app in the result

2. When the Windows Security app opens, Select "Virus and Threat Protection"

3. Now, scroll down to the "Virus and Threat Protection Settings" section and click the "Manage Settings" link.

4. Next, locate the "Automatic Sample Submission" option and toggle it OFF.

5. You can also decide to submit a sample manually by clicking the link below the toggle.

That's it.

However, if you're using a third-party antivirus that isn't Windows Security then you should check your antivirus settings to see if there's a way to stop it from uploading specific files to its servers as well.
