Before you find yourself on this page I believe you know what a RAM{Random Access Memory} is used for in any computing device (A computer to be precise).
According to Wikipedia,
Random-access memory is a form of computer memory that can be read and changed in any order, typically used to store working data and machine code.
In summary, the RAM is needed to enjoy super-fast computation since it is used as a short-term memory storage space for the computer to place data it’s currently working on for easy accessibility.

In a PC, there exists a Physical RAM and a Virtual RAM, and both work for memory management… Physical RAM is a physical memory that holds the applications, documents, and procedures on a computer(More RAM, More Speed).
While Virtual Memory on the other hand is a memory management technique that allows data located in the RAM and not currently being used to be transferred to the hard disk making space available in the RAM for other programs.
A Virtual memory holds the files on your hard drive for easy retrieval when a computer runs out of physical RAM.
If you notice any lagging on your Windows PC due to Physical RAM shortage then you should follow the below steps to upgrade your virtual memory as both hardware and software makes use of the virtual memory to compensate for physical memory shortages.
In this article, We’ll learn how to Increase and upgrade the Virtual Memory (RAM) for Windows XP, Windows 10, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 7 users.
How to Increase Virtual Memory (RAM) On a Computer
How to Increase RAM on PC – Windows XP, Windows 8/8.1, Windows 10, Windows 11, Windows 7
- Go to “Control Panel” > Click on “System and Security” > navigate to the “System” section
- Select “View Amount of RAM and Processor Speed” from the options
- Click on the “Advanced System Settings” from the sidebar.
- From the “Advanced” tab, select “Settings” under the “Performance” section.
- Move to the “Advanced” Tab
- Under the “Virtual memory” section, click on the “Change button“
- Select the C: Drive
- UN-tick the “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives” to enable the selection of the “Custom Size” option

- Click on the “Set” button > Click “OK” on all prompts.
- Lastly, click on the “OK” button at the bottom to finalize it
That’s it.
Now, Restart your PC so that the changes you’ve made can take effect… Once your PC is back on, go back to number 6 and watch your Virtual RAM change as you can now enjoy better computation speed on your Windows PC.
